Training

Unfortunately, as a club, we not able to offer initial training to unqualified pilots. However, once you have qualified, through a BHPA accredited school, we are able to convert you over from the basic tow leg to the more advanced chest release winch tow system.

It typically takes 8 to 10 flying days to complete your basic training and obtain your Club Pilot (CP) rating through an accredited school. Although, this could be spread over several months as life and the British weather often gets in the way. The overall time it takes you to learn can be minimised if you plan to do your training in the fairer weather of the British summer or are fortunate enough to be able to go abroad, to sunnier climes, for your training!

The cost is around £1,000 for training and a similar amount again to buy yourself a second hand hang glider, harness, and altimeter and variometer.

After this, annual costs are just petrol, BHPA membership (around £75), club membership (£25), tows (£1.75 per flight) and any servicing and repairs you may need to make.

It is now possible to have a go at Hang Gliding by having a Dual Flight, with an experienced pilot in control at all times. It can be a great way to help you decide if you would like to formally take up training

Getting Trained

Learning to fly on a winch is a faster, and less physically demanding, way to gain your rating. There are two tow schools close to us:

Lejair

The oldest tow school in the UK is run by Tony Webb who was one of the early pioneers of the towing method in the UK. They operate from Great Fransham, west of Norwich, for two months in the Summer but the remainder now finds them out in Spain where the weather is more suited for learning. Their website is www.lejair.com

Airways

Run by women's champion and TV peronality Judy Leden and her husband, Chris Dawes. This school operates from an airfield near Ashbourne, in Derbyshire. Their website is www.airways-airsports.com
